Spring Lawn Care Guide: What Should You Be Doing Right Now?

Spring has finally arrived, and after a long, wet winter your lawn is ready for some attention. Cold temperatures, heavy rainfall and reduced sunlight can leave turf compacted, mossy and struggling to grow.

The good news? A few well-timed steps in early spring will set your lawn up for a healthy, thick, green season ahead.
Here’s your simple but effective spring lawn action plan.
1. Inspect and Clear Debris
Start by walking your lawn and checking for:
Moss build-up
Compacted or waterlogged areas
Bare patches
Weed growth
Signs of disease
Remove leaves, twigs and general debris. This improves airflow and allows sunlight to reach the grass plant, helping it recover faster.
2. First Mow of the Year
Your first cut sets the tone for the season.
Keep the mower height high for the first cut and gradually lower it over the next few weeks. Never remove more than one third of the grass blade at a time — cutting too low too soon weakens the plant and invites weeds and moss.
Sharp mower blades are essential for a clean cut and healthier turf.
3. Tackle Moss Properly
Moss thrives in damp, compacted conditions — exactly what winter leaves behind.
Apply a moss control treatment to knock it back. After 2–4 weeks, scarify or rake out the dead moss. Removing it creates space for healthy grass to fill in.
Remember: killing moss is only part of the solution. Addressing drainage and compaction is what stops it returning.

4. Aerate Compacted Areas
Winter foot traffic and heavy rainfall often leave soil compacted.
Aeration relieves compaction, improves drainage and allows oxygen to reach the roots. Healthier roots mean stronger, more resilient grass throughout the year.

5. Apply Selective Weed Control
As temperatures rise and grass begins actively growing, it’s the ideal time to apply a selective herbicide.
This targets broadleaf weeds without harming your lawn, allowing the grass to thicken and outcompete unwanted plants.
6. Repair Bare Patches
Bare areas won’t fix themselves.
Lightly rake the soil surface, overseed with a quality grass seed mix, and keep the area consistently moist until established. Early spring is an excellent time for this while soil temperatures are improving and moisture is still present.

7. Feed Wisely
Choose a slow-release nitrogen fertiliser to gently encourage steady growth.
Avoid high quick-release feeds early in the season — they create excessive top growth without strengthening the roots. A balanced spring fertiliser supports both colour and root development.
Bonus Tip: Check Your Equipment
Before the season gets busy, sharpen your mower blade and check your machinery. Clean, sharp cuts reduce stress on the plant and lower the risk of disease.
